The London Citizen Cyberscience Summit 2012
Science should not be just for scientists.
An increasingly wired world is helping to bring this concept to reality. But it is important not to be complacent about this process. Even with the strides made in the last ten years, key participant groups and environments remain inaccessible. reaching them is a challenge worthy of our best efforts in Engineering. it can lead to better environments, better science and improvements in social and environmental justice.
We would like to invite you to the formal launch of “Extreme Citizen Science”, a new research group in UCL Engineering. Called “ExCiteS” for short, the group is inter-disciplinary in approach, and includes anthropologists, geomatic engineers, computer scientists, geographers and human-computer interaction experts.
The research group will take information-gathering and analysis to the toughest environments and most marginalised communities, funded by an EPSRC Challenging Engineering grant. Our work will empower a diverse group of people and communities, and extends from indigenous people in central Africa to groups in inner London. We already haveadvanced plans to work with both non-literate tribes in the Congo Basin and deprived communities in Hackney. We will work together to first log information about their local environment, to understand how the information can make a difference, and then to get the changes they seek.
The launch will be part of the Citizen Cyberscience Summit which is taking place in London on 16th – 18th February 2012
